Accessibility
Web sites need to be accessible not only
to youngsters with perfect eyesight using the latest PC - but to people
with a range of abilities, software and computers, and increasingly,
to other computers.
Visual impairment
Standards for accessibility develop rapidly
and we assess the audience of each site to apply the most appropriate
techniques. This site follows the WAI
guidelines. For example:-
- The font size automatically adjusts to the size set on your PC
- The text and background colours have good contrast
- Background logos are faint
- Images all have alternative text
Computers
It's important that
not just people, but other computers can read your website.
Computers don't generally read
images
or interactive menus so it is very important to make sure that
as well as looking attractive, the page is designed with other computers
in
mind. Some
hand held devices such as Blackberrys can not display eye-catching
designs or dazzling visual interfaces, so it is important that what
they DO display makes sense and that the site can still be navigated.
Search engines
We design our pages so that
they can be read, categorised and ranked by search engines - see web
site promotion and search engines.
Browser software
Pragmatically, we usually advise designing
for
browsers released in the last 5 years (IE6+, firefox3 etc). Last month,
only 60 visitors out of 60,000 acessed our pages using older browsers.
We can of course design pages for any browser of any age should you
need
it.
