FTP Programs

FPT requires a program to do the transferring of the files. A good program which can be downloaded from the Internet is SmartFTP.

Carry out the following procedure to get the program onto your computer.

1 open your web browser (Firefox of Internet Explorer
2 do a Google search for Download SmartFTP
3 download the program and run the setup procedure
4 note that the use of the program is free for charities and non-profit making concerns.
5 if you are a business you have to pay for a licence which is not expensive.
6 when you have installed the program, go to start menu>all programs>smart FTP client,
then put the pointer over smart FTP client. Press the right button to create a shortcut.
When the submenu opens click the left button over create shortcut.
Now drag a shortcut to the desktop.

When you have downloaded the program, run it. Find your way around the window that opens. Start by going to File>New Local Browser. This opens a pane (part of the window) showing the files stored on your own computer.

go to File>New Remote Browser. This opens a small window which asks you for information about your entry on the Internet. At this stage you will need your logon details. For the purposes of these notes we will assume that your website address is www.mysite.com. The window asks you for the following information:

HeadingExample ReplyComment
Protocol needed as it is
Host ftp.mysite.com note ftp, not www
Path leave blank for the moment
Login Type leave as username and password
Usernamemysite the username will have been given to you. It is sometimes case sensitive.
PasswordGt67uiP the password will have been given to. It is sometimes case sensitive.
Favorites at the name by which you wish the job to be known.

When you have logged in successfully, you will see the directory structure of your Internet site. You may see a folder called www, which is used on Windows sites, or you may see HTdocs, which is used on UNIX sites. These directories contain your website, and the contents are PUBLIC. If you are storing private files, do not put them in these directories. Make a new directory on the Internet computer in the usual way by clicking the right button over the Internet window. You can call this directory more or less anything you like. If you are storing private files, you could call the directory private. When you created this directory, you should see a window with only a small number of directories in it including private and www or HTdocs. If you see a large number of files including a file called index you have put private in the wrong place.

At this stage, go to favorites>manage favorites, look for the connection you have just set up and find its properties. Change the path to private. This step is not essential but will help to prevent you from making mistakes when you logon.

The transfer process is straightforward. It is so easy that one must be careful not to make mistakes. Your own computer probably has a recycle bin. the Internet computer does NOT have a recycle bin, so take great care.
