Introduction

This is a quick introduction to the use of ftp (file transfer protocol) to transfer files between your computer and your web space on the Internet. FTP is the standard way of getting your web files published.

Another use of ftp is to transfer files to your web space, not for publication, but possibly as a backup or so that users with password authority can refer to the same files. These notes were written for one particular user, but may be of general interest.

The user is a small business with two offices. The business makes use of a small database, and staff at the two offices wish to use the database. They also each want to amend it by downloading it to their own machine and uploading the amended file when it has been edited.

Care needs to be taken that data is not lost and that the file is not being edited by two people at the same time. Further pages in these notes explain one procedure that can be followed.
